10 Year Old Wounded By Gunfire In Calumet Township

At approximately 3:30 this afternoon, a 10-year-old girl was wounded by gunfire in the 4100 block of Cleveland Street, which is located in an unincorporated area of Gary, Indiana (Calumet Township).  The girl was shot in both legs and was transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital in Gary for treatment.

An investigation into the circumstances of this shooting is currently underway.  Preliminary information indicates a black male in a blue van pulled into the parking lot of a national discount retail store location, when a dog reportedly began to charge at him.  The male subject pulled out a handgun and began firing at the dog.  The gunfire missed the dog but hit the girl multiple times.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers conducted a search of the area and are still looking for the van.

“It breaks my heart to learn that a child was wounded this afternoon, and we are praying for her speedy recovery,” said Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.  “Our officers conducted an initial search of the area and are still looking for the van described in this incident, and we’re urging anyone with information to call 9-1-1.”
