15 Year Old Shot Getting Off Bus In Gary

Gary Police responded to shooting Wednesday around 4:00 PM near 7th & Clay where a 15 year old boy was shot getting off a bus, according to Gary Police Commander Jack Hamady.

An altercation took place near the bus stop with a group of males and one boy pulled out a handgun from his waistband and shot once hitting the victim in his chest, Hamady stated. He was transported privately to Northlake where police were then called. The student is expected to make a full recovery.

A letter sent out to administration staff noted another student possibly shot the boy and was still at large. Gary Police are working in conjunction with the school to identify the suspect.

This prompted random security checks at West Side Leadership Academy. Upon completion of those checks it was determined that additional safety measures are needed at West Side and will be implemented over the next days, Gary School Corporation said in a release Wednesday. The school also decided to go virtual Thursday and Friday till those measures could be put into place. Classes will resume in person on Tuesday, September 7th.
