19 Arrested During NWI Task Force Night

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Special Operations Unit along with more than a half dozen other police agencies conducted an overnight enforcement targeting vehicle thefts, and also drugs and violent crimes, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr told RNS. The enforcement, held on Tuesday April 5th, yielded 19 arrests for various offenses.

Indiana State Police arrested two juveniles who were accused of carjacking a driver in Chicago less than an hour before their arrest in Indiana.

Lake County Sheriff’s Department officers arrested a total of 7 Indiana residents on a list of charges including drugs, a weapon offense, a traffic offense and outstanding warrants. Lake County officers also recovered one vehicle that was stolen from Illinois.

Schererville Police Department officers arrested an Indiana resident and also confiscated 2 grams of suspected cocaine.

Hobart Police Department officers arrested two Indiana residents on weapon and drug charges. One Illinois resident was also arrested for a drug offense.

Merrillville Police Department officers arrested two Indiana residents on outstanding warrants and one Indiana resident for a drug offense.

St. John Police Department officers arrested one Indiana resident on an outstanding warrant.

Hammond Police arrested two individuals on non-extraditable warrants, and one Indiana resident on an outstanding warrant. Hammond police also assisted Illinois State Police who were initially in pursuit of the two juvenile carjacking suspects. Indiana State Police joined in the pursuit and through a combined effort, the offenders were taken into custody.

“I am extremely proud of the cooperative effort of officers from each agency that participated in this enforcement. Together, we are truly making a difference by keeping our Lake County community safe,” Martinez said.
