5 Killed In Train Collision With Car In Gary

On June 25, 2025, at 10:02 p.m., the Gary Police Department was dispatched to the intersection of U.S. Route 20 and Utah Street, in Gary in response to a vehicular accident involving a train at the location, according to Gary Police. 

Upon arrival, Gary Police and firefighters from the Gary Fire Department located five deceased victims on the scene who were ejected from an SUV, which was severely damaged, following a collision with a South Shore Train. Preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle struck by the eastbound train went around an active railroad crossing, Gary Police said.  

The Lake County Coroner’s Office removed the deceased from the scene and transported them to their facility. The identification of the deceased was released by the Lake County Coroner’s Office Thursday evening.  De’Mario Craig, 24, Maurice Parrish, 20, Sherise Parrish, 20, Latianna King, 20, and Bryon Towns, 21, all who resided at the same address in Gary. Coroner David J. Pastrick thanked his staff and all the agencies involved during this traumatic call for their teamwork, support, and give sincere Condolences and prayers for all the families.

Traffic Investigator Detective T. Aguilar of the Gary Police Department, in partnership with the NICTD Transit Police Department, are actively investigating the fatal crash. Several crew members and passengers occupied the South Shore Train during the collision, none of whom sustained injuries. 

The Gary Police Department extended their sincere condolences to the friends and families of those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy. “You are in our thoughts and prayers, and we are committed to providing you with unwavering support during this difficult time.”
