Dive Team Call Was False Alarm Thursday

Thursday at approximately 7:39AM a passerby called dispatch and stated they saw a man jump off the draw bridge into the Indiana Harbor Canal located near Indianapolis Blvd and Riley Road in East Chicago, according to police.

Northbound and Southbound traffic was closed while water rescue teams from Hobart, Cedar Lake, Crown Point, Merrillville and the East Chicago Fire Department investigated the incident.

East Chicago Police Patrol & Criminal Investigation Division was able to make contact with the US Army Corp who had video footage of the alleged incident. After reviewing the video footage it was discovered that an individual walked across the bridge on the walkway Northbound on Indianapolis Blvd and proceeded past the bridge over the canal never jumping into the canal.
