INDOT To Close WB Ramps Friday
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced ramp closures related to the bridge deck overlay project for westbound I-80/94 from Indianapolis Blvd to the Illinois State Line starting Friday, July 9. Work will also start on the Calumet Ave bridge deck overlay project on Sunday, July 11.
The ramps from northbound and southbound Calumet Ave and northbound and southbound Indianapolis Blvd to westbound I-80/94 will be closed starting the evening of July 9. The detour will be to enter I-80/94 eastbound, continue to Kennedy Ave, exit to northbound Kennedy Ave and re-enter I-80/94 westbound. These closures will be in place through the duration of the work on westbound I-80/94, which is expected to take approximately three weeks.
On I-80/94 westbound, four lanes will remain open during daytime hours throughout the life of the project. Overnight lane closures will be utilized to set up or reconfigure the work zone lane configuration approximately every seven days beginning overnight on July 10. Work will start in the inside lanes, with four lanes shifted to the right during phase one. Crews will work from the inside lanes out, and motorists should be prepared for lane shifts and changing traffic configurations in the area. Restrictions on westbound I-80/94 will be in place for approximately three weeks.
There is also a bridge deck overlay project occurring on the Calumet Ave bridge over I-80/94. Starting Sunday, July 11, Calumet Ave will be reduced to one lane in each direction. The southbound left lane and northbound right lane will be closed during phase one. This is a multi-phase project so motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns at this bridge through October.
The ramp from eastbound I-80/94 to northbound Calumet Ave will also be closed during phase one of the Calumet Ave project, which will start July 11 and be ongoing for approximately four weeks. The detour for that ramp will be to enter I-80/94 eastbound, continue to Kennedy Ave, exit to northbound Kennedy Ave, re-enter I-80/94 westbound and then exit to northbound Calumet Ave.
A bridge deck overlay is a protective treatment done to extend the life of a bridge deck. INDOT urges drivers to stay alert near crews and follow traffic directions carefully. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time when driving through this area. Drivers should slow down and drive distraction-free through all work zones.
