Gary Police Chief Meets With Gary Schools On Safety Concerns

Message From Gary School Corporation Manager Dr. Paige McNulty

Thursday morning, members of the Gary Community School Corporation administration, West Side Leadership Academy leaders and the Gary Police Department met to address safety issues that are of great concern at the high school. Yesterday’s random security check revealed that several students are violating the District’s safety policy by bringing items that are prohibited on school grounds, according to The Gary School Corporation.

Further, an incident occurred yesterday after school (off school property) where several students were involved in an altercation leaving one student with a gunshot wound. Thankfully, the student is recovering, and the Gary Police are working to apprehend those involved. However, this type of violent behavior will not be tolerated.

Immediately following this morning’s meeting, I recorded the below video with Gary Police Chief Brian Evans concerning the immediate steps we are taking to ensure the safety of our students, staff, parents and other community stakeholders who have a presence in school buildings. Know that our safety plan is evolving and that we will be transparent in our efforts to keep parents, guardians and concerned citizens informed.

As we go through this process of refining our safety procedures, we will need your help! There will be volunteer opportunities, and we are counting on you to speak with your students about conducting themselves in a safe manner.
