Driver Killed In Head On Crash In Gary
On Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at approximately 11:36 PM a Gary Police Officer observed a crash on Grant Street at 32nd Avenue, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield. The officer called for all needed emergency personnel to the scene.
It was discovered that a 1989 white Chevy Caprice, driven by a 27-year-old male from Gary, was traveling southbound on Grant Street at a high rate of speed, Westerfield said. For unknown reasons the white Caprice went left of center at the intersection of 32nd Avenue striking a 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup head on. The driver of the white Chevy Caprice was declared deceased on scene by the Lake County Coroners Office. The Lake County Coroner has identified the male as Paul Smiley, 27, of Gary.
A female passenger from the Caprice and the driver of the Chevy truck were transported to the hospital for treatment by Gary Fire Department Medics.
The investigation is ongoing.
