Hammond SWAT Nets Drug Dealing Arrest

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, at approximately 5:00 AM, the Hammond Police Department SWAT team raided a residence in the 7100 block of Jefferson Street, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police.

The raid was part of an investigation that led to two arrests and confiscation of heroin, cocaine, Xanax, cash, and a firearm, Kellogg said. One man who was arrested was identified as 47-year-old Matthew Popplewell who was arrested for Dealing a narcotic drug, dealing cocaine, and dealing a controlled substance. A second individual charged is 44-year-old Edward Auksel and was arrested for a violation of parole warrant and resisting law enforcement.

“I’m pleased that we were able to remove these individuals from the street and make Hammond a safer place”, said Police Chief Andy Short.
