Portage Family Walks Into A Burglary In Progress Before The Suspect Stole Their Car
On Saturday June 4, 2022 around 8:45 PM, Portage Police were called to the 2800 block of Teresa St in reference to a burglary in progress the home owners interrupted, according to Portage Police.
Upon the family entering the home they were met by the suspect who forced them into a bedroom under threat of harm if they did not comply. While the family was in the bedroom they could hear the suspect rummaging through the house. The suspect then left in the families vehicle and they called 911.
At the time of the call the Portage Police were advised of the suspects description and vehicle make but neither were immediately located. Officers on scene were able to process belongings the suspect had left behind which identified him as Steven Jones, 37, of Portage.
Officers from the surrounding area were advised to be on the look out for the suspect and stolen vehicle. The license plate information was entered into the LPR systems across the area.
On Sunday, June 6, 2022 around 10 AM, Matteson, Illinois received notification their LPR system got a hit for the stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle was quickly located with Jones driving it. He was taken into custody without incident.
Jones will be awaiting extradition back to Porter County to face the charges of:
Burglary – Level 4 Felony
Criminal Confinement-Level 5 Felony
Intimidation – Level 6 Felony
Auto Theft – Level 6 Felony
Theft – Class A Misdemeanor
