Porter County Bomb Squad Called For Old Mortar
On August 30th, 2022, Cedar Lake Police Officers were dispatched to a residence located in the 10900 block of 129th Ave. in reference to a homeowner who believed they located a possible military mortar shell, according to Chief William Fisher.
Cedar Lake Officers spoke with the homeowner, whom stated that they were working inside of a shed on there property. While inside and moving items around, they located an old mortar shell partially buried in the ground.
Southcom Dispatch notified the Porter County Bomb Squad, whom responded to the residence, Fisher stated. Upon inspecting the item, Porter County determined that it was an old-World War II British Smoke Grenade and had been rendered inert.
Officers continued to check the area and located a second device that was determined to be a World War II rifle grenade that had also been rendered inert and non-functional. The military ordinance was removed from the residence by the Porter County Bomb squad and the area was cleared. “I want to thank the Porter County Sheriff’s Department and the Bomb Squad for there quick response and assistance with this incident,” Fisher said.
