Intoxicated Merrillville Woman Hits Person, Car, and Garage
At approximately 8:58 PM, Saturday, April 29, Crown Point Police responded to the 100 block of Horst Street for a report of a vehicle that had driven off the roadway.
Upon arrival, police discovered a red 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Crossover that was being driven by Heather Grzelak, 35, of Merrillville, Crown Point Police stated in a news release. According to witnesses on the scene, Grzelak was driving a red 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Crossover when she drove down a dead-end roadway and reversed off the road into a pedestrian, another vehicle and a garage. The pedestrian suffered leg pain but was standing, alert and conscious when police arrived. The garage had light structural damage, and the vehicle had minor damage, police said.
When police arrived, the car was parked, and Grzelak, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was inside. When police asked Grzelak to step out of the car, they observed she had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. When asked by police if she had been drinking, Grzelak said, “No.” Grzelak failed on-site field sobriety tests. Grzelak was transported to the Crown Point Police Department, where her blood alcohol content was found to be 0.170, more than twice the legal limit.
Grzelak was arrested and taken to the Lake County Jail without incident. Charges have been presented to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office and are pending at this time.
