Fatal Motorcycle Crash In Portage Tuesday
On Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at approximately 11:55 PM, Officers of the Portage Police Department responded to the 3300 block
of Swanson Road in reference to a report of a motor vehicle collision with injuries.
Upon arrival, it was determined that
a motorcycle and pickup up truck had collided, and the motorcyclist had sustained serious bodily injuries.
The initial investigation shows that a red 2000 Yamaha V-Star was southbound on Swanson Road near Birch Avenue
when a black 2022 Chevrolet Silverado backed out of a driveway on the west side of the road and into the path of the
motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a forty-seven-year-old male from Center Township, was unable to avoid the collision and struck the passenger side of the pickup truck. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Portage Fire Station #1 is in close proximity to the crash site and the driver of the pickup truck went directly to the station and alerted fire personnel who immediately responded and began life saving measures. The injured motorcyclist was transported to the Portage hospital but did not survive his injuries.
The Porter County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to Northwest Health Portage Emergency Room regarding a fatality. Upon arrival the deputy was informed that the decedent, identified as 47-year-old Christopher Richardson from Center Township, had been the driver of a motorcycle that collided with a truck on the 3300 block of Swanson Road, Portage. Autopsy and toxicology are pending.
The Portage Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to continue the investigation. The
driver of the pickup truck showed no indicators of alcohol or drug use.
