Merrillville MTAS Team Handles Hostage Situation
On 9/25/2023 at approximately 4:10 PM, Merrillville patrol officers were dispatched to the 6600 block of Pennsylvania Street for a possible hostage situation, according to Merrillville Police.
Officers responded to the scene and attempted to make contact with the occupants of the residence. They were unable to get in contact with anyone, but heard a female yelling for help. Officers immediately contacted MTAS (Merrillville Tactical Apprehension Team) and requested their assistance at the scene.
MTAS officers and Merrillville Police negotiators arrived on scene and began to correspond with the occupants of the residence via phone calls. After several hours, negotiators were able to get the female victim out of the residence safely.
MTAS officers were then able to make entry into the residence and take the male suspect (Anthony Bonner) into custody.
Bonner had two active warrants for his arrest through the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and he is currently confined in the Lake County Jail.
