Student Involved In Confrontation With School Officer Manages To Pull Trigger On Officers Gun In School Office
Monday morning at Hammond Eggers School an administrator noticed two students roaming the hallways, according to a release from the School City of Hammond (SCH). The administrator communicated with Security Staff to escort the students to the main office. Both students were escorted to the office, but one student had a mental health episode during this time, according to SCH.
Despite several attempts to redirect the student, the campus was put on “lockdown” while security attempted to resolve the situation. A SCH Security Resource Officer (SRO) had to restrain the student who was having a mental health episode and brought her into the main office. Hammond Police stated in a release this particular 14 year old female had a history of confrontations with law enforcement with this incident being no different.
While the SRO restrained the student, the student made several attempts to grab the SRO’s gun and at some point disabled the safety on the officer’s gun and pulled the trigger while the gun was still holstered, SCH stated. A bullet was fired and went into a wall, lodging into a supply cabinet. The student was eventually fully restrained and members of the Hammond Police Department (HPD) arrived and transported the student to the Hammond Police Department and took the student into HPD custody.
The incident occurred in the main office and away from the student population, SCH added. The students involved will be disciplined according to the SCH Student Code of Conduct, which defines consequences for students exhibiting negative behaviors. Hammond Police also stated charges would be forthcoming related to resisting law enforcement.
