Pedestrian Fatally Struck In Crown Point
On 1/2/2023 at approximately 5:42 PM, police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the 13700 block of Chase Street in unincorporated Crown Point for a vehicle crash involving pedestrian, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.
Upon arrival, it was determined that the pedestrian was still trapped under the vehicle and was deceased. Crown Point EMS arrived and confirmed lifesaving measures would be unsuccessful. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian, an 83-year-old male, had just gathered his mail and was walking back across the street to his residence. For an unknown reason, the male either kneeled or bent over in the roadway. A 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV operated by a 42-year-old female was traveling south on Chase Street and observed an object (pedestrian) in the roadway and began braking heavily. The female driver was unable to stop and hit the pedestrian.
The Lake County Coroner identified the victim as Raymond Chermak, 83, of Crown Point.
At this time, there is no indication that drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the collision.
