Crown Point Welcomes Home Local Heroes

A welcome home parade took place Tuesday evening for Crown Point Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Cusack and his K-9 partner Jake as they arrived off the expressway in Crown Point.

The duo was deployed on September 24th to aid with Hurricane Helene efforts in Florida with Indiana USAR Task Force 1, joining an 80-person team of search and rescue professionals from Indiana.

On September 30th, the task force relocated to North Carolina to help in some of the hardest-hit areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. In the wake of the second hurricane, Hurricane Milton, the task force was reassigned to Florida afterwards on October 8th.

This was the duo’s eighth deployment with IN-TF1 and the sixth deployment for a hurricane. After more than 10 years of service, K-9 Jake is slated to retire at the end of this year.
