Gary Man Charged In Murder Of His Brother

On October 22, 2024 Gary Police Department received a call for service in the 3800 block of W. 10th Ave., in Gary, according to Commander Jack Hamady. The caller advised dispatch there was a gunshot victim at that location.

Officers arrived on scene and met with individuals inside the residence. The Gary Fire Department was on scene and began working on a male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. Gary Fire Department transported the male victim to Methodist Northlake Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

While officers were on scene they spoke to witnesses and the suspect was identified as a 40 year old male and a relative to the victim, Hamady said.

The victim was identified as Claudell Ellis, 44, from Gary and the brother to the suspect.

On scene officers learned that the two brothers and another relative had returned home after work when a minor accident had occurred in front of the house involving a vehicle vs tree.

The argument continued inside of the residence and that is when the victim sustained the gunshot wound. The 40 year brother stayed on scene after the shooting, where he was taken into custody and transported to Gary City Jail.

Lake County Prosecutors Homicide Task Force and Lake County CSI arrived on scene.

On October 23, 2024, Lake County Prosecutors Homicide Task Force secured charges on the brother, Julian Ellis, for Murder and an Enhancement (Firearm used in Commission of Offense). Julian Ellis is in custody at the Lake County Jail.
