On November 25, 2024 at approximately
2:00 AM, Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a weapons offense in the 1300 block of W. 47th Ave., in Gary, according to Gary Police.
Officers arrived on scene and were met by Lake County Sheriffs Department officers who advised that there was a male down near the sidewalk of a residence. The male subject did not appear to have any signs of life at that time and the Gary Fire Department personnel arrived on scene. Gary Fire Department advised that the subject was deceased.
A male homeowner was on scene and was detained, as well as a firearm was secured. The male homeowner was transported to Gary Police Department for a statement.
Sources close to this investigation told RNS the deceased subject may have been attempting to gain entry into the homeowner’s vehicle when he was shot. Police did not confirm if that was the case as of early Monday.
Officers secured the crime scene and contacted Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, Lake County CSI and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The deceased male has been identified by the Lake County Coroner as Karriem Branch, 25, who is listed as homeless.
