Porch Pirate Captured In Highland
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at approximately 2:12 PM, Highland Police were dispatched to the 2600 block of Eder Street for a report of a theft, according to a press release from Highland Police.
On arrival, Officers spoke with the reporting party and learned that he received an alert on his Ring doorbell showing a package had been delivered. He then stated that just three minutes later, his Ring doorbell alerted him again and this time he observed a male in a black jacket and grey pants picking up the package from his porch. The male then entered a dark colored Ford Fusion and then left the area with the package. As Officers checked the area, another call came in of an attempted package theft from another residence with the offending vehicle being a dark colored Ford 4-door with an In God We Trust license plate.
An Officer then observed the described Ford with an In God We Trust Plate being driven by the described suspect near Kennedy Avenue and Ross Street. A traffic stop was conducted on the Ford and upon approaching the driver, the Officer observed the front passenger’s seat to be full of packages and the rear seat of the vehicle was filled with packages up to the roof. The driver first stated was picking up packages as part of a job where he then delivered those packages to other destinations but when asked for documentation of this, he could not provide anything. The Officer at the first call then arrived and confirmed that the person seen taking the package from the porch was this driver who had been stopped in the Ford.
The suspect was then taken into custody.
The suspect is a 30 year old male from Gary, Indiana, Highland Police said. The vehicle was impounded and the large amount of packages were taken to the Highland Police Department. Additional charges are pending and this matter is still under investigation.
If you were a victim of theft and you have your order invoice and identification, you may contact the Highland Police Department (219-838-3184) to claim your packages.
