Hobart Middle School Student Found With Gun After Other Student Reported It

On January 14th, at approximately 3:00 PM, Hobart Police and School Resource Officers were alerted by School City of Hobart personnel that a middle school student was in possession of a firearm while on a school bus, according to a Hobart Police press release.

The School Resource Officer and patrol officers immediately intercepted the student on the bus, taking him into custody. An unloaded handgun was found in his possession. Police added no ammunition was recovered. The 14 year old Hobart Middle School student was subsequently transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center.

Hobart Police investigations, in collaboration with School Resource Officers, is ongoing as they work to determine how the student obtained the firearm and the intent behind his actions.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff are always our top priorities. I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred today on a bus to ensure transparency and to reinforce our commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment,” Dr. Peggy Buffington
Superintendent of Hobart stated in an email to parents. “We understand that incidents like this can be unsettling. Our school counselors and administrators are available to speak with any student who may have concerns or questions,” Buffington added.

“We commend the bravery of the people who reported this information to school personnel, Hobart Police said. This incident highlights the importance of the “See Something, Say Something” initiative. We encourage all students and parents to discuss the significance of reporting suspicious behavior to trusted adults and School Resource Officers. Hobart Police and the School City of Hobart remain committed to the safety and security of our schools. We continue to collaborate on security protocols and safety plans to ensure that our schools are safe places for the entire community.”
