Gary Police Investigating Fatal Crash
At approximately 5:52 PM, Monday, the Gary Police Department responded to a reported head-on vehicle crash at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Johnson Street in Gary, according to Gary Police. The caller indicated that two vehicles had collided and that one of the vehicles was emitting smoke.
Upon arrival, officers found two vehicles involved in a head-on collision with both drivers trapped in their vehicles. The Gary Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and worked to extricate the occupants.
One driver, identified as a 24-year-old female from Gary, was removed from the vehicle and transported to Methodist Northlake Hospital for treatment of injuries.
The second driver, identified as a 37-year-old female from Portage, was unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced deceased.
The Lake County Coroner has identified the deceased as Tiffany Nickels, 37, of Portage.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office and the Gary Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit were notified and are actively investigating the incident.
