Indiana State Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Jasper County

The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, is investigating an officer involved shooting, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield.

Preliminary investigations by the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division Lowell Post revealed that today, at approximately 4:15 PM, a deputy with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on S.R. 14 east of C.R. 475 E. This location is near the Pulaski County line on S.R. 14.

During the traffic stop, the officer attempted to arrest the suspect when the suspect resisted. An altercation took place between the suspect and the officer, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and fatally wounding the suspect. The investigation also shows that during the traffic stop, the suspect was in possession of a firearm.

The deceased has been identified as Matthew W. Huttle, 42, from Hobart, IN., according to the Jasper County Coroner.

Huttle was released in 2024 after investigators said he was seen on video inside the Capitol building going into “multiple” offices, the Crypt area and hallways during the January 6th, Capitol Breach. He was sentenced in November 2023 to six months in prison and a year on supervised release after pleading guilty to entering and remaining in a restricted building, a lower charge than issued to his uncle, Dale Huttle, whom he traveled with that day. After being released President Trump added him and others to the Pardon List.

The following is a statement from Jasper County Sheriff Patrick Williamson. “For full transparency, I requested the Indiana State Police to investigate this officer involved shooting. The officer that is involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard protocol and is our policy in these situations. Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic to those that were close to Mr. Huttle. I will release the officer’s name once I have approval from the State Police Detectives.”

The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Jasper County Prosecutor’s Office for formal review.
