Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter Launches Gun Safety Literacy Program for K-3 Students
February 4, 2025 In an effort to protect the youngest members of our community, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter has launched the Gun Safety Literacy Program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at teaching children in kindergarten through third grade about gun safety in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
In partnership with the School City of East Chicago, the program will debuted with approximately 60 third-grade students at Benjamin Harrison Elementary School in East Chicago. Harrison School will serve as the first site for this life-saving initiative designed to help children stay safe by avoiding unsecured firearms.
At the heart of the program is Careful Carter, an adorable canine mascot who helps children learn the critical steps to staying safe if they ever encounter a firearm. Through relatable scenarios, kid-friendly visuals, and interactive activities, the program ensures young learners understand the importance of staying away from guns and immediately seeking help from a trusted adult.
The Gun Safety Literacy Program empowers young students with practical knowledge while fostering trust and open communication between children, parents, and law enforcement. “Our children’s safety is non-negotiable,” said Prosecutor Carter. “This program gives young students the tools they need to recognize danger and make safe choices if they encounter a gun. By introducing these lessons early, we’re helping prevent tragedies before they happen.”
This initiative stems from the alarming number of tragic shootings involving children who gain access to unsecured firearms. By educating young learners, the program aims to prevent these avoidable tragedies. “Too many children lose their lives or are seriously injured because guns aren’t properly secured,” said Carter.
The Gun Safety Literacy Program is an extension of the Gun Safety Lock Giveaway Program, which Prosecutor Carter launched last year to distribute free gun locks to residents across Lake County. Together, these programs tackle gun safety at both the adult and child levels, emphasizing the shared responsibility to prevent firearm-related accidents.
