Heroic Sheriff Officer & Tree Company Rescues Dog From Rooftop

Lake County Sheriff’s Department Officers launched a dramatic rescue to save a dog that somehow made its way to the roof of a three-story house, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.

On Tuesday, someone in the area flagged Lake County Sheriff Officer M. Vicari down after spotting the dog on top of a home near 18th & Malcolm X Drive in Gary sometime around 1 PM.

The Gary Fire Department was contacted but refused to respond citing that they did not want to risk the safety of their fire personnel, Martinez said.

As a result, Lake County Sheriff’s Department police officer Sgt. C. Salomon asked nearby tree experts at Townsend Tree Company to bring a boom lift or cherry picker to help bring the dog down safely.

The company worked with Officer Vicari to rescue the dog from the roof without incident. Gary Animal Control and Silver Strays took possession of the dog.

“I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to both Officer Vicari and Sergeant Salomon for their bravery and compassion. We thank them for going above and beyond the call of duty! Also, a big thanks to Townsend Tree Company, Gary Animal Control, Silver Strays and all of the members of the community who pitched in to save the dog. It’s wonderful to see so many people working together to help an animal in need,” Martinez added.
