
Crews Working To Clear Debris From Storms
Tornado warned storm hits parts of the region hard including Highland and Gary Wednesday evening. The National Weather Service issued the warning around 5:20 PM with warnings of winds over 60 MPH and quarter size hail possible.
Multiple trees fell on homes in the 9400 block of Forrest in Highland causing extensive damage. A roof was partially ripped off in the 9600 block of Indianapolis Blvd as well.
As the storm went through Gary it caused extensive structural damage to buildings including Frankie Woods McCullough Academy on 21st & Wallace. About 3 blocks in this area had significant possible tornado damage. One woman was trapped in her home and had to wait for NIPSCO to clear lines around her home due to multiple poles being snapped. The Hardrock Casino had multiple windows broken from the strong winds as well.
NIPSCO is reporting around 15,000 customers without power currently.
The City of Gary is confirming that residents reported the sighting of a funnel cloud near 21st Avenue and Hendricks, according to a release. Emergency response teams are on-site, actively assisting residents who have been impacted by the storm.
The city’s General Services teams are diligently working to clear fallen branches and debris from streets and public areas in the affected neighborhoods.
