Merrillville Man Arrested for Allegedly Pointing Gun at Driver and Child in Road Rage Incident
A Merrillville man has been arrested following a road rage incident in which he allegedly pointed a loaded firearm at another driver and his 3-year-old daughter, according to court documents filed in Lake County.
The suspect, identified as Isaac Mitchell, now faces felony charges. The incident occurred along 93rd Avenue in Crown Point, where the complainant, reported a frightening encounter with an armed driver.
According to the complainants written statement to police, the situation began when a vehicle abruptly merged in front of his, forcing him to brake hard while driving home with his young daughter. The complainant stated that he honked in reaction to the dangerous maneuver. In response, the driver allegedly raised his middle finger and continued to make aggressive gestures as both vehicles approached a traffic light.
As the complainant pulled into the turn lane next to the other vehicle—later identified as a Toyota RAV4—the driver reportedly aimed a black Glock-style pistol at him and his daughter. Shocked and frightened, the complainant called 911 immediately.
He told officers that after initially passing the suspect, the driver began to follow him, eventually stopping in the road for several minutes while waving at him to pass. The complainant refused, following 911 dispatchers’ instructions. Moments later, the suspect allegedly made a sharp U-turn, drove toward them again, called him a “bitch,” and pointed the firearm in their direction, mimicking a shooting motion.
Police responded quickly and, with the help of a photo provided by the complainant, identified the suspect and located the vehicle. Merrillville officers detained Issac Mitchell and recovered a 9mm Glock pistol and two loaded magazines from the scene. Officers confirmed that Mitchell was the only person in the vehicle during the incident.
After reviewing statements and evidence, officers determined that Mitchell would be placed under arrest. He was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail. The firearm and magazines were entered into evidence, and the Toyota RAV4 was towed from the scene.
No injuries were reported, and the child was unharmed.
Mitchell faces charges including intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness. The investigation remains ongoing, and court proceedings are pending.
