Gary Man Charged in Violent Domestic Incident at Portage Motel
A Gary man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he physically assaulted and restrained a woman during a domestic incident at a Portage motel, with children reportedly present nearby.
According to court documents, officers were dispatched to a motel along U.S. Highway 20 in Portage on May 17, 2025, after a witness reported a disturbance. Upon arrival, police located a visibly distressed woman and three young children outside a motel room.
According to court documents, the woman had visible injuries to her neck and face, including red marks and swelling. Officers determined that a verbal altercation had escalated into a physical confrontation inside the room, involving Kelvin Miles Jr., 30. The woman was allegedly physically overpowered and pinned to the bed with Miles’ knee pressed against her back. He also reportedly applied pressure to her neck using both hands.
Investigators believe the victim was confined against her will inside the motel room and that Miles attempted to prevent her from contacting police. Authorities noted that three children were in the immediate area at the time of the incident and could hear the disturbance from outside the room.
Miles was taken into custody following the investigation. Officers noted the condition of the room was consistent with signs of a struggle.
On May 19, 2025, Kelvin Miles Jr. was charged with:
- Criminal Confinement with Bodily Injury (Level 5 Felony) • Domestic Battery Committed in the Presence of a Child Less Than 16 Years Old (Level 6 Felony) • Strangulation (Level 6 Felony) • Sexual Battery – Victim Compelled to Submit by Force or Imminent Threat (Level 6 Felony)
- Intimidation – Threat to Commit a Forcible Felony (Level 6 Felony)
Miles is currently lodged in the Porter County Jail.
