Hammond Man Charged After Police Chase Ends in Crash in Munster

According to court documents, a Hammond man is facing multiple charges after leading police on a pursuit that ended in a crash & rollover involving two vehicles and the recovery of a concealed firearm.

On May 23, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., a Highland police officer was on duty in the area of the 3300 block of Ridge Road when he observed a black BMW sport utility vehicle traveling westbound on Ridge Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned southbound onto Indianapolis Boulevard and disregarded the red traffic signal.

Although the officer activated his emergency lights and siren, the vehicle turned westbound onto Ridgewood Street at a high rate of speed, then headed north on Prairie Avenue, disregarded a red traffic signal, and continued westbound on Ridge Road changing lanes and traveling left of center.

As the pursuit continued with emergency lights activated, the vehicle disregarded a red traffic light at Calumet Avenue in Munster. It then struck a vehicle traveling northbound on Calumet Avenue, struck another vehicle traveling southbound on Calumet Avenue, and came to a stop in the middle of the roadway.

The male driver, and only occupant, exited the black BMW SUV and began to walk away. Officers gave verbal commands, which the driver did not follow. The subject refused to comply, pulled away from the officer’s grasp, and was physically resisting. A Taser was deployed, and he was taken into custody. He was identified as Angel Isidro Rivera, 28, of Hammond.

A loaded Springfield Armory 9mm handgun was located concealed in the lower portion of his pant leg. A records check confirmed that Rivera had a prior felony conviction for Domestic Battery Committed in the Presence of a Child from June 2023 in Lake County.
