Memorial Day Solo March Raising Mental Health Awareness
This Memorial Day, Army Veteran Sgt. Aaron Suarez is taking on a powerful solo march from the Whiting Memorial Monument to the Veterans Memorial in Munster. Approximately 10 miles. There’s no GoFundMe, no donation links, just a mission to raise awareness about veterans’ mental health.
Suarez chose Memorial Day for a reason: while many combat veterans make it home physically, too many continue to fight silent battles. Every day, an average of 22 veterans take their own lives. This walk is for them, a step toward breaking the stigma and bringing attention to the mental health crisis affecting our heroes.
Suarez, who’s participated in Chicago’s “Ruck of Honor” for years, can’t make it there this time due to work obligations, so he’s making his own path. He clocks out of work at 6 a.m. and plans to hit the road around 7/7:30 a.m.
No fanfare, no fundraising; just boots on the ground for his brothers.
