Chicago Man Charged After Ramming Police Cars in Stolen Vehicle With Machine Gun

Kentrel Jamon Leggitt, 28, of Chicago has been charged in Lake County following a June 24, 2025, incident involving a stolen vehicle and the recovery of multiple firearms, including a modified machine gun.

According to court documents, officers with the Hammond Police Department located a stolen silver Toyota Camry at the Luke’s gas station on State Line Avenue. The vehicle had been reported stolen and was flagged as wanted for fleeing and eluding on June 21, 2025, by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in Illinois.

As officers attempted to contain the vehicle, Leggitt reportedly reversed and struck both police vehicles before fleeing on foot. He was taken into custody shortly after.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a cigar containing approximately 0.9 grams of suspected marijuana and a backpack in the rear seat containing a Draco-style pistol. Officers also recovered a Glock 23 and a Glock pistol equipped with a machine gun conversion switch. Ammunition and a drum magazine were located inside the vehicle.

Leggitt told officers he was aware of an active warrant for his arrest. He admitted to ramming the squad cars and confirmed that he was not permitted to possess firearms or ammunition.

According to court documents, Leggitt’s prior felony convictions include:

    •    March 30, 2016 – Convicted of two counts of Residential Burglary in McHenry County, Illinois; sentenced to four years imprisonment for each count, served concurrently.

    •    November 23, 2020 – Convicted of Unlawful Use or Possession of a Weapon by a Felon in Cook County, Illinois; sentenced to four years imprisonment.

    •    April 29, 2025 – Convicted of Aggravated Fleeing Police; sentenced on June 2, 2025, to two years imprisonment in the Illinois DOC.

Court documents also state that Leggitt had an active arrest warrant issued on June 6, 2025, in Lake County, Indiana, for a pending Level 6 felony auto theft case.

Charges filed on June 26, 2025:

    •    Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon, Level 4 Felony

    •    Battery by Means of a Deadly Weapon (two counts), Level 5 Felony

    •    Possession of a Machine Gun, Level 5 Felony

    •    Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun with a Prior Felony Conviction (three counts), Level 5 Felony

    •    Resisting Law Enforcement – Operating a Vehicle (two counts), Level 6 Felony

Leggitt is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
