Chicago Man Charged in Lake County After High-Speed Chase Leads to Gun, Drug Discovery
Tyreese M. Russell, 32, of Chicago, has been charged in Lake County following a high-speed incident on June 28, 2025, that resulted in the discovery of a loaded firearm and marijuana during a roadside investigation.
According to court documents, an Indiana State Police trooper observed two vehicles traveling at excessive speeds—up to 100 mph—in a 55 mph zone on I-80 near the Indianapolis Boulevard exit. One of the vehicles, a Mercury Mountaineer, exited the highway and was eventually stopped on the shoulder near 175th Street.
Troopers reported that the driver, later identified as Russell, exhibited signs of intoxication and refused multiple commands to exit the vehicle. He allegedly attempted to start the vehicle and flee, prompting officers to draw their firearms and physically remove him from the vehicle.
A police canine alerted to the presence of narcotics, and a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded 9mm handgun in the center console, along with three bags of marijuana and a digital scale located in a backpack on the rear seat. The passenger identified the bag as his but denied any knowledge of the firearm. Investigators later confirmed that Russell has a prior conviction for burglary in Cook County, Illinois, classifying him as a serious violent felon.
Charges Filed (June 28, 2025):
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon: Level 4 Felony
• Resisting Law Enforcement: Class A Misdemeanor
• Reckless Driving: Class C Misdemeanor
Russell is currently lodged in the Lake County Jail.
