Ford Heights Man Sentenced to 18 Years for Robbery Scheme Targeting Vulnerable Victims
Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter announced today that Demarco Guy has been sentenced to a total of 18 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections following an argued sentencing hearing by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Adam L. Martin.
DPA Martin worked in collaboration with the Dyer Police Department and Dyer Detective Zachary Schauer to bring the case to resolution. In one case, Guy was found with a sawed-off shotgun concealed in his sleeve. His method of operation involved targeting vulnerable drug addicts, getting them high inside a vehicle, and then coercing them into robbing gas stations—leaving them feeling they had no choice but to comply. The three armed robberies that occurred were at; the Exxon gas station, located at 501 Joliet St. (November 23, 2023), Speedway gas station, located at 718 Joliet St. (December 21, 2023) and the BP gas station located 3325 Sheffield Ave. (December 23, 2023).
“This defendant was dishonest, dangerous, and manipulative,” said Prosecutor Carter. “He preyed on individuals already struggling with addiction and exploited them to commit violent crimes.”
Judge Salvador Vasquez agreed with the prosecution’s assessment, noting the harm to the drug-addicted co-defendants and the three total victims involved. The court sentenced Guy to 9 years in each cause, to be served consecutively, for a total of 18 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.
Prosecutor Carter commended Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Martin, Detective Schauer and the Dyer Police Department for their dedication in seeking justice for the victims and ensuring the community is safer with Guy behind bars.
