Teen Struck By Car Leaving Calumet High School

On Wednesday, August 13th, at approximately 2:40 p.m., police officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a car vs. bicycle crash in Calumet Township near Calumet New Tech High School, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.

A preliminary investigation revealed a 17-year-old male riding a bicycle was headed southbound and was in the crosswalk at Ridge Road & Calhoun Street. He was struck by a red Hyundai traveling westbound. As the teen fell to the ground, the impact tossed his bicycle causing it to strike a second vehicle.

A volunteer Lake Ridge Paramedic happened to witness the accident and responded immediately to the student, according to a release from the school.

The teen was transported to an area hospital for treatment, then transferred to the University of Chicago Medical Center. No one else was injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
