Crown Point Man Charged in Head-On Crash That Left Woman Seriously Injured
A Crown Point man has been charged after allegedly driving drunk and causing a head-on collision that left a woman with multiple serious injuries, according to a probable cause affidavit.
On February 1, 2025, Lake County Sheriff’s officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of West 169th Avenue in Lowell in reference to a crash. Responding officers found two SUVs with heavy front-end damage — a silver Ford Escape driven by Cody Warren Fields and a gray Kia Soul driven by a woman driver.
According to police, Fields showed signs of intoxication and multiple open beer cans were observed inside his vehicle. A blood draw later revealed Fields had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.219.
Investigators determined Fields was traveling about 85 mph in a 40-mph zone when he crossed the center line and struck the Kia head-on.
The woman told investigators she was traveling westbound when she saw Fields’ vehicle cross the center line into her lane. She attempted to slow down and veer off the roadway but was struck head-on.
Court documents state the woman suffered lacerations to her right knee requiring stitches, a fractured right femur, a fractured L1 vertebra, and injuries resulting in a traumatic brain injury with two areas of bleeding in the prefrontal lobe. She now requires speech therapy and experiences short-term memory loss. The woman also suffered a crushed left ankle with multiple broken bones that required surgery with screws and pins.

• Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (Level 5 felony)
• Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more (Level 5 felony)
• Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person (Class A misdemeanor)
• Reckless Driving Causing Bodily Injury (Class A misdemeanor)
• Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (Class C misdemeanor)
