Hammond Man Charged With Resisting Law Enforcement And Driving Offenses In Munster

According to court documents, Miguel Angel Gallegos, 23, of Hammond, has been charged after officers alleged he led police on a high-speed pursuit through Munster before fleeing on foot .

On September 13, 2025, around 3:07 a.m., a Munster police officer observed a black 2007 Honda Civic traveling 71 mph in a 35 mph zone on Calumet Avenue. When the officer activated lights and sirens, the vehicle accelerated toward I-80 eastbound in what was described as a clear attempt to evade.

Police reported the vehicle reached speeds in excess of 120 mph, weaving through traffic and even turning off headlights and taillights to avoid detection, creating what officers called a significant risk to other drivers. The pursuit was terminated near Kennedy Avenue, but a license plate reader later identified the vehicle as registered to Gallegos .

Officers went to his Hammond residence, where they found the Civic still warm from being driven and Gallegos’ wallet lying next to the driver’s side door. While attempting contact, a female identified as the vehicle’s registered owner opened the door but denied Gallegos was inside. Moments later, officers began a foot pursuit after spotting a man matching his description running behind the residence.

Police said Gallegos entered another vehicle nearby, but Hammond officers quickly stopped it, taking him into custody. According to the affidavit, Gallegos apologized to officers and admitted, “yeah, I know, I’m sorry,” regarding the chase. He was first transported to Munster Community Hospital for evaluation after complaining of head pain, then booked into the Lake County Jail .
