
Portage Man Accused of Possessing Meth, Stolen Firearm During Traffic Stop
HAMMOND— A Portage man is facing felony charges after police say a traffic stop led to the discovery of more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, a stolen handgun, and drug-dealing materials.
According to court documents, a Hammond police officer stopped a Chevy Impala on Sept. 18, 2025, near the 1800 block of Michigan Street for excessive window tint, an unreadable license plate, and disregarding a traffic control device. The driver was identified as 32-year-old Charles Kenneth Nafus III, of Portage. Police reported the occupants were making furtive movements as the officer approached.
A K9 unit alerted on the vehicle, and officers recovered two bags containing a crystal-like substance weighing 51.1 grams that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Police also found a CANIK 9mm handgun, additional methamphetamine, three digital scales, and multiple baggies with residue .
Investigators said Nafus admitted he was a convicted felon and aware he could not possess a firearm. He further admitted to selling methamphetamine throughout Northwest Indiana, and told police the drugs recovered belonged to him and that he intended to use them.
Court records show Nafus was previously convicted of Dealing in Cocaine in 2021 in Lake Superior Court, making him a serious violent felon under Indiana law .

• Dealing in Methamphetamine – Possession with intent to deliver, 10 grams or more (Level 2 Felony)
• Possession of Methamphetamine – More than 28 grams (Level 3 Felony)
• Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon (Level 4 Felony)
