State Police Lowell Investigations Division Requested to Investigate Officer Involved Shooting in New Chicago

New Chicago- On September 20th, 2025, the Indiana State Police District #13 Investigations Division was requested to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred in New Chicago, according to Sgt Glen Fifield.

Preliminary information shows that on September 20th at approximately 3:30 p.m., Hobart Fire Department Paramedics and the New Chicago Police Department responded to a 911 call at 216 Huber Boulevard, Hobart, IN (New Chicago) for a report of a deceased subject inside of that residence. While at the residence investigating the death, the co-owner who was also the 911 caller, became agitated with the officers. The officers requested an ambulance respond to the scene for a psychological evaluation to be performed on the agitated individual.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., New Chicago Police radioed to dispatch that shots had been fired inside the residence. The second subject was later found deceased inside the residence by officers and medics.

No officers were injured during the incident. The officers are currently on paid administrative duty, which is standard procedure for these incidents, New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo stated. Once the officers have been interviewed by the Indiana State Police Detectives, their identification will be released to ensure full transparency with our citizens, Mayo added. “I would ask for the public’s patience as these investigations take time.”

Identification of the deceased will be released by the Lake County Coroner once family notifications have been made. An autopsy will also be completed.

“On behalf of the New Chicago Police Department, we want to express our deepest condolences to the family of those who lost their loved one on Saturday afternoon,” Mayo said. “This is a tragic event, and our thoughts are with those who are grieving. We understand the seriousness of this incident and the impact it has on our small community. A thorough and transparent investigation is underway, and we are fully committed to ensuring the facts are brought forward.”

This is an active investigation, and no further information can be released at this time, State Police said. Once the investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
