HAZMAT Incident In Valparaiso

At approximately 1:37 PM, Porter County Hazmat received a report of a possible chemical spill on Enterprise Drive in Valparaiso, according to a release.

Upon arrival, it was determined that a chemical storage tank of sodium hydroxide, operated by Shoremet had been inadvertently overfilled. Valparaiso Fire Department, Valparaiso Police Department, Valparaiso Water Department and IDEM also responded. The surrounding area was immediately isolated to keep nonemergency personnel from entering the area out of an abundance of caution. A rave alert was also sent through the Porter County 911 center to all citizens in the area, warning them to stay out of the area.

The leak had already been stopped prior to emergency responders arrival. Air and water samples were taken by responding units to ensure there was no danger to personnel in the area. A hazardous materials cleanup crew was called and is on scene to conduct cleanup of any residual product in the area.

Enterprise Drive will remain closed by emergency personnel until cleanup is completed. Hazmat will remain on scene during that time.
