Gary Man Charged in Gas Station Robberies and Stabbing

A Gary man is facing multiple felony charges after police say he carried out two violent robberies in the early morning hours of September 23, 2025, one of which left a victim hospitalized with stab wounds.

According to court documents, the first incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. at the GoLo gas station on Grant Street in Gary. A woman reported that a man wearing a gray jacket followed her inside the station, made her uncomfortable, and later approached her outside. She said the suspect attempted to grab her, struck her in the head with a closed fist, and ran off with a bag of items she had just purchased, including bottled drinks, snacks, and tobacco products.

Surveillance video confirmed the account, showing the man following her, attempting to open her car door, and then punching her in the head before fleeing on foot with her bag. Officers noted the victim had a large contusion on her head and a cut to her lip consistent with her statement.

About two hours later, police were called to another disturbance near the Arco gas station on Broadway Avenue. A man was found bleeding from stab wounds to his chest and back. He told officers that while standing in line to purchase drinks, the suspect approached from behind and slapped him. After he struck back, the suspect pulled a knife, chased him across the street, and stabbed him twice before taking his cellphone. The victim later required staples to close both stab wounds.

Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from both gas stations, which showed the same suspect wearing identical jeans and shoes. Officers said he was wearing a gray jacket during the first incident and a dark shirt during the second.

Later that morning, officers located and arrested Joseph Gene Kubiszewski, 41, near 11th Avenue and Broadway. Police recovered a small pouch containing his identification card, a pocketknife, debit cards, hygiene items, and the stolen cellphone belonging to the stabbing victim.

Detectives noted that when they attempted to interview Kubiszewski in custody, he appeared highly agitated, punched the cell wall, and yelled random words at other detainees.
