Michigan City Man Charged After Armed Robbery At Chesterton Antique Shop

Chesterton- A Michigan City man has been charged in Porter County after police say he robbed a Chesterton antique shop at knifepoint in broad daylight.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Porter Superior Court, officers were called around 11:57 a.m. on October 6, 2025, to an antique shop on Lincoln Avenue in downtown Chesterton after reports of an armed robbery.

The business owner told investigators that a man entered the shop asking about collectible plates. After being shown several items, including some kept in the basement, the suspect followed the owner back upstairs, displayed a knife, and demanded money.

The affidavit states the suspect, identified as Nicholas Connor Taylor, 23, told the victim “Gimme your money” while standing near the front counter. The owner opened the cash register, and the suspect took the money directly from the drawer before leaving the store. The victim said the man took several bills totaling an undisclosed amount and described the knife as wide and triangular in shape.

As the suspect exited, three customers were entering the store, and the man reportedly held the door open for them before leaving. Those witnesses later provided a description to police, saying the suspect was a Black male wearing a gray hoodie with a distinct white emblem on the left side of the chest. One witness photographed the man as he walked out.

Another witness told police he made a mental note of the suspect’s vehicle make and Maryland license plate, saying out-of-state plates were uncommon in the area.

Chesterton detectives used license plate reader data and located a blue Hyundai Elantra with Maryland plates that had been seen near the store before the robbery. The vehicle was registered to Nicholas Connor Taylor of Michigan City, whose BMV photo matched the image captured by a witness.

Charge filed October 7,2025:

    •    Robbery While Armed With a Deadly Weapon — Level 3 Felony

Taylor remains lodged in the Porter County Jail.
