Rensselaer Man Charged With Attempted Murder
Rensselaer- Court documents show a 39-year-old Rensselaer man has been charged with multiple felonies including attempted murder after a shooting near North McKinley Street on the evening of October 9, 2025.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Rensselaer Police received a 911 call at approximately 7:47 p.m. from a male reporting “Shawn McGan is shooting” near the 400 block of North McKinley Street. Witnesses told officers that McGan was outside the residence “yelling about burning down the house” before moving north through yards between the 500 block and 516 North McKinley Street. A witness stated McGan stopped, faced him, and began reaching around his waistband. The witness said he heard a “gun cock” and then a single gunshot followed. Other witnesses nearby also reported hearing the gunshot.
McGan was later located at a residence in the 400 block of East Elm Street and taken into custody. A search warrant was executed, and officers recovered a purple Ruger LCP .380 handgun hidden in a bucket of apples on an enclosed porch. The firearm had previously been reported stolen and was also suspected to be the weapon in an earlier shots fired incident in which McGan was charged but the gun had not been found at the time. The resident told officers the gun was not hers.
Investigators also reviewed Ring doorbell footage showing McGan walking between the residences at the time of the shooting. According to the affidavit, McGan has a prior felony conviction out of Kentucky for Assault 2nd Degree in 2013, for which he was sentenced to seven years.
Prosecutors have also filed a Habitual Offender enhancement, alleging McGan has three prior unrelated felony convictions: a 2021 theft conviction in Jasper County, a 2019 battery against a public safety official conviction in Jasper County, and a 2017 operating a vehicle while intoxicated conviction in Perry County.
