Suspect Arrested After Violent Struggle With Officer at New Chicago Gas Station
New Chicago, IN — A routine police check at a local gas station turned violent early Saturday after a suspect allegedly assaulted a clerk and resisted arrest, according to a press release from the New Chicago Police Department.
The incident unfolded around October 11, 2025, at the Gill Gas Station, located at 3502 Michigan Street. Officers from the New Chicago Police Department arrived at the station to refuel and conduct a standard premise check when the on-duty clerk alerted them to a group of individuals she wanted trespassed from the property. The clerk told police the same group had been involved in previous theft incidents.
One of the individuals, later identified as James Robinson III, allegedly pushed the clerk while exiting the store after being confronted about the earlier thefts. When officers approached a dark-colored pickup truck where Robinson and others were seated, they issued a trespass order and began verifying Robinson’s information.
Police say Robinson gave conflicting details about his date of birth and identity, prompting further investigation. When officers attempted to detain him, Robinson reportedly resisted and a physical struggle broke out in the parking lot.
During the altercation, police say Robinson attempted to grab the officer’s firearm before fleeing the scene on foot. A pursuit ensued, with assistance from Lake Station Police, who helped locate and apprehend Robinson a short time later.
Even after being captured, Robinson allegedly continued to resist arrest—kicking and biting officers as they attempted to place him into the patrol car and causing damage to the vehicle.
He was eventually secured and transported to the Lake County Jail, where he faces multiple charges connected to the incident. The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office is currently reviewing the case.
New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo commended his officers for their professionalism under dangerous circumstances, assuring the public that the situation was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
“Our officers demonstrated courage and restraint in a volatile situation,” Chief Mayo said. “We remain committed to keeping New Chicago safe and maintaining the trust of our residents.”
