Burglary at La Porte Church Leads to Arrest of 22-Year-Old Suspect

La Porte- Prosecutors have charged Anthony W. Gasaway Jr., 22, in connection with a burglary at St. Joseph Church/School, located at 101 C Street, on October 19, 2025.

According to court documents, surveillance footage showed Gasaway approaching the church ramp from First Street at approximately 5:26 p.m., sliding open a metal security gate, and throwing a brick at the pair of front entry doors. Investigators documented that the right glass panel was shattered out, with glass scattered all over the ground, and the left glass panel was shattered but still intact.

Video then showed Gasaway entering the church, remaining inside for approximately two minutes, and leaving with three brown plastic grocery bags, full of unknown items. Investigators also observed a second door leading into the pantry area with a glass panel shattered out.

Gasaway lives approximately 4–5 blocks away from the church. Detectives located him at that address, and when questioned, he initially denied going to the church. After being read his Miranda rights, however, Gasaway admitted he went to the church, busted the window with a brick, and took three grocery bags full of miscellaneous food and grocery items.

Church personnel also reported that Al’s Supermarket vouchers stored in a safe off the pantry room were missing. Gasaway was arrested for burglary and transported to the La Porte County Jail.
