2 Men Charged After Fleeing Hammond Traffic Stop
Hammond- Two men are facing multiple felony charges after police say they fled a traffic stop in Hammond at over 90 miles per hour, crashed into another motorist, and were found with a handgun and drugs that tested positive for both marijuana and fentanyl.

According to probable cause affidavits filed October 31, 2025, a blue Hyundai made an unsafe start near Chicago Avenue in Hammond on October 29, 2025, causing other motorists to brake abruptly. The vehicle then made an improper left turn onto Calumet Avenue before a Lake County Sheriff’s officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

The vehicle initially began to slow down before making a sudden U-turn, entering oncoming traffic, and fleeing the stop. It reportedly reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour before crashing into another vehicle near 141st Avenue in Hammond, the affidavits state.
The driver was identified as Trevone Kitchen, 26, of Gary, and the passenger as Makale Marquis Carter of Chicago.
A search of the vehicle revealed a Glock 22 .40-caliber handgun on the driver’s side floorboard, a baggie containing a green leafy substance on Kitchen’s person, and another baggie on the front passenger seat near Carter.
Investigators reported that both recovered substances appeared caked and mixed with another material. Field testing showed the baggie recovered from Kitchen’s person weighed 14.8 grams and tested positive for both marijuana and fentanyl, while the baggie found near Carter weighed 2.2 grams and also tested positive for marijuana and fentanyl.
Court filings show Kitchen has a prior felony conviction for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon from Cook County, Illinois (2021).
