Michigan Man Charged After 150 MPH Pursuit Through Porter County Ends in Roundabout Crash
Porter County- A 26-year-old Michigan man, Marco Antonio Munoz, of Benton Harbor, has been charged in Porter County after allegedly leading Indiana State Police on a high-speed pursuit that reached 150 miles per hour on Interstate 94 before crashing through a roundabout near U.S. 421.
At approximately 4:02 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper observed a red Chevrolet Camaro traveling 96 mph in a 70 zone near the 21.8-mile marker of I-94 eastbound in Chesterton, according to the affidavit. When the trooper attempted a traffic stop, the Camaro accelerated rapidly, weaving around traffic and forcing a pickup truck off the roadway.
The vehicle allegedly continued eastbound, reaching speeds of 150 mph, passing other motorists by using both inside and outside shoulders, and nearly striking a Michigan City Police cruiser positioned in an interstate crossover.
The Camaro exited onto U.S. 421 south, traveling more than 130 mph and reportedly turning off its headlights and taillights in an attempt to evade pursuing officers. Moments later, the vehicle struck and ramped through the center of a roundabout near County Road W 600 South, disabling it.
A Michigan City Police officer located the vehicle near the Dollar General warehouse south of the roundabout and took Munoz into custody. The Camaro had flat tires, deployed airbags, and heavy damage.
According to troopers, Munoz admitted he “blacked out” and fled because he was scared. He was found with $6,745 in cash, a phone, and a key fob for the Camaro. A portable breath test indicated 0.000% alcohol, and he was medically cleared at Northwest Health Porter before being lodged in the Porter County Jail.
