Three Men Charged After Hobart Police Seize Meth, Cocaine, Guns, and Cash at Veteran’s Complex

Merrillville- Three men have been charged in Lake County after detectives with the Hobart Police Department executed coordinated search warrants at the Veteran’s Apartments in Merrillville, uncovering methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, syringes, firearms, and cash.

Detectives began investigating suspected drug activity at the Veteran’s Apartments in October 2025. According to court filings, cocaine and methamphetamine were exchanged during the investigation — including 0.4 grams of cocaine, 2.6 grams of methamphetamine, and an additional 2.1 grams of methamphetamine — before police obtained search warrants for three connected units occupied by Roger Avery Wright, Gregory Lee Nance, and Lescester Shelley.

    •    Roger Wright — Officers recovered methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, glass pipes, and a digital scale from his residence. Wright declined to give a statement to investigators.

    •    Gregory Nance — Police found methamphetamine, syringes, and multiple firearms, including a handgun, shotgun, and two rifles. Court records show Nance was previously convicted of Strangulation in 2025 in Newton County, classifying him as a serious violent felon prohibited from possessing firearms. Nance admitted knowing he could not have a gun but said he was “fixing it for a doctor.”

    •    Lescester Shelley — Detectives located 1.4 grams of methamphetamine, marijuana, $381 in cash, six glass pipes, and digital scales with meth residue. Shelley allegedly told police he sells methamphetamine to supplement his income and has several regular customers.

    •    Dealing in Methamphetamine (Between 1 and 5 grams) — Level 4 Felony (two counts)

    •    Dealing in Cocaine — Level 5 Felony

    •    Maintaining a Common Nuisance (Controlled Substances) — Level 6 Felony

    •    Possession of Marijuana — Class B Misdemeanor

    •    Possession of Paraphernalia (Introducing Controlled Substance into Body) — Class C Misdemeanor

Gregory Lee Nance :

    •    Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon — Level 4 Felony

    •    Possession of Methamphetamine (<5 grams, Enhancing Circumstance) — Level 5 Felony

    •    Possession of Methamphetamine (<5 grams) — Level 6 Felony

    •    Unlawful Possession of a Syringe — Level 6 Felony

    •    Possession of Marijuana — Class B Misdemeanor

    •    Possession of Paraphernalia (Introducing Controlled Substance into Body) — Class C Misdemeanor

Lescester Shelley :

    •    Dealing in Methamphetamine (Between 1 and 5 grams) — Level 4 Felony

    •    Possession of Methamphetamine (<5 grams) — Level 6 Felony

    •    Unlawful Possession of a Syringe — Level 6 Felony

    •    Maintaining a Common Nuisance (Controlled Substances) — Level 6 Felony

    •    Possession of Marijuana — Class B Misdemeanor

    •    Possession of Paraphernalia (Introducing Controlled Substance into Body) — Class C Misdemeanor

All 3 suspects are lodged in the Lake County Jail.
