Gary Man Charged After Alleged Wrong-Way Pursuit Through School Zone

Gary- A 27-year-old Gary man, Eugene Yosef Patrick, has been charged after allegedly leading Lake County deputies on a daytime pursuit through a posted school zone and multiple residential blocks.

Around 1:26 p.m. on November 5, 2025, a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy  was patrolling near West 5th Avenue and Bigger Street when he saw a gray Nissan Altima traveling about 50 mph in a clearly marked 35 mph school zone. When the deputy activated his lights to initiate a stop, the driver allegedly refused to pull over and continued eastbound at roughly 40 mph.

According to the affidavit, the deputy activated his siren and air horn while radioing dispatch that he was in pursuit. The Altima continued through the Chase Street intersection toward Bridge Street before signaling to turn north on Grant Street. The driver then turned east onto West 4th Avenue — a one-way street — and reportedly drove the wrong way for approximately eleven blocks, weaving in and out of traffic.

The pursuing deputy attempted several precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuvers, but reported that the Altima “brake-checked” and swerved toward the police vehicle. As the chase neared Madison Street, the car abruptly braked and turned south. Gary Police joined the pursuit as the vehicle crossed back through 5th Avenue and continued through residential blocks before finally stopping near 7th Avenue and Madison Street. Patrick then placed his hands outside the window and surrendered without incident.

Charges filed November 7, 2025:

    •    Resisting Law Enforcement – Uses a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony)

    •    Leaving the Scene of an Accident – Driver Fails to Immediately Stop (Class B Misdemeanor)

    •    Reckless Driving – At Unreasonable High or Low Speed Endangering Safety (Class C Misdemeanor)

Patrick remains lodged in the Lake County Jail
