Hobart Couple Charged After Infant Tests Positive For Amphetamines
A Hobart couple is facing felony charges after police say their one-year-old child tested positive for amphetamines following a controlled substance investigation at a local motel in Hobart.
According to court documents, an officer responded to a 911 call on July 28th with a report of a female using narcotics in the presence of her one-year-old child at the Key West Motel in Hobart. Police reported that when they arrived, an individual on scene stated that Delores Mae Klebs had been using narcotics with the child nearby. The officer reported seeing in plain view a loaded, uncapped hypodermic syringe near where the child was laying, along with a clear glass pipe recognized through training and experience as being used to ingest narcotics.
Investigators then made contact with Nicholas George Klebs, who stated he had just arrived back from work to the location where he, Delores, and their child were staying. Detectives requested consent to search the room and Nicholas agreed. Inside the motel room, police reported finding a hypodermic syringe containing a clear liquid that field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Officers also located several plastic baggies, a clear glass pipe, additional syringes, more plastic baggies, and two digital scales—one sitting out and one inside a gray backpack.
According to the court documents, the same witness told investigators she had earlier observed Delores injecting what she believed to be methamphetamine while the child was on the bed next to her. Both Delores and Nicholas admitted to using narcotics but denied ownership of the items recovered from inside the motel room.
Police wrote that a family member took the child to a hospital the day after the incident out of concern for the child’s health. According to medical records reviewed by investigators and prepared in the ordinary course of business, the one-year-old tested positive for amphetamines during a drug screen.
