Roadside Worker Airlifted After Serious I-65 Crash in Hobart

Hobart- At approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, Indiana State Troopers responded to a serious crash on I-65 southbound at the 255.9 mile-marker, approximately one mile north of 61st Avenue. The crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian working along the shoulder.

Preliminary investigation shows that a white 2021 Ford F150 pulling a utility trailer, both owned by Interstate Business Solutions, was parked on the right shoulder. Interstate Business Solutions is a roadway contractor whose employees routinely work along interstates picking up trash and debris while wearing high-visibility orange vests.

A white 2006 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling in the right lane when, for unknown reasons, it left its lane and struck the parked F-150 at a high rate of speed. The force of this impact pushed the F-150 into the pedestrian who was standing outside of the pickup, collecting debris in the ditch. The Silveraodo then overturned and came to a rest in the right lane.

The pedestrian that was struck sustained serious injuries and was flown from the scene to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Silverado was transported to Franciscan Health Crown Point, also with serious injuries.

The Indiana State Police urge all motorists to move over or significantly reduce speed when approaching work crews, emergency vehicles, or anyone stopped on the side of the roadway. A moment of caution can prevent a tragedy.
